About Adam Smith Global Television

Adam Smith Global Television is a new high-profile non-profit initiative dedicated to raising the level of economic literacy in the United States. It is designed to educate Americans in the importance of globalization and put a human face on the global economy.

In the wake of the besieged World Trade Organization meeting in Seattle, Washington, in the fall of 1999, this task of raising the global economic literacy of American citizens has become even more urgent.

What is it?

In this new age of globalization, we all have a stake in what happens overseas - even though many Americans don't realize it.

Chairman Greenspan has spoken of the dangerous assumption that the U.S. can remain isolated - "an island of prosperity" - in a sea of troubles. Yet there are increasing signs that Americans are less interested and less well-informed about international events than at any time in more than half a century. Since the late 1980s there has been a well-documented retreat from foreign coverage in mainstream media. Broadcast television - still the major source of news for most Americans - has all but given up reporting global stories. This trend towards isolationism is considered by many in business to be alarming - and damaging to our national interest.
