Russia Threat or Promise

VIEWER RESPONSE to Adam Smith Russia

Democratic Representative RICHARD A. GEPHARDT, Missouri:
"As you know, in July I led a Congressional delegation to Brussels, Berlin, Moscow and London. Our purpose in making this trip was to examine the full range of bilateral and regional issues that comprise our nation's relationship with key nations in Europe, including matters relate to our mational security, foreign policy and trade.

"En route to Moscow, we viewed 'Adam Smith Russia: Threat or Promise?' Having visited Russia numerous times over the course of my career, I found the program to be a valuable resource as I prepared to experience the country for the first time since President Putin took office. Although the program covered a wide array of issues, the coverage of Putin himself and the struggle of NTV with regard to freedom of the press was particularly interesting. Your program provided insights that contributed significantly to a discussion we had on this issue with several Russian journalists while in Moscow.

"Through this production, you have done a commendable job of making complex international issues understandable and interesting for both the professional and the average viewer. It is my hope that you will make this and other interpretive essay-style programs readily available to colleges and high schools, as they can be powerful teaching tools. I also encourage you in future efforts to create programs on international issues that affect all Americans."

RAY SHILLING, California:
"My compliments to your team. 'Adam Smith Russia: Threat or Promise?' was one of the most well-crafted and thorough works of journalism I have had the pleasure of viewing. Let me request you make a transcript available via the Russian Internet for the benefit of educated young Russians - as well as Russia's leaders. Keep up yhe good work!"

IAN HAGUE, New York:
"I run a series of investment funds focusing on Russia. In the seven years I have been working in Russia I cannot recall a single Western broadcast about current events there that provided as clear and thorough an outline of the major issues facing the country. It was remarkable."

DAN HENDERSON, California:
"Thank you, Adam Smith. I very much look forward to all the installments of your global television series."

IAN JOHNSTONE, New York:
"Bravo. Excellent. Better than anything else I've seen recently on Russia. What you are doing - first-class journalism on foreign affairs topics of importance to Americans - is simply missing from the schedules now that the commercial news divisions have cut their foriegn coverage. It's important - and what public TV was invented to do."
